Fortified by Global Warming, Deadly Fungus Poisons Corn Crops, Causes Cancer

miercuri, 16 ianuarie 2013

Global warming is real. Climate change is real. This article should not be linked to it.

The headline writer's choice distracts from the content of the article. Even the "climate variable" quote in paragraph 3 doesn't back up the headline.

A fungus that favors drought conditions spreads in the US since 2011 (because 2012 is a severe drought year in the US), is not climate trend news. While droughts may become more common, a single drought event, no matter how severe, is at this time still "a drought". (Even though we ARE changing the climate).

Beetles destroying trees in the Northwest, Alaska and Canada where they'd previously been contained by colder winters? Could be due to climate change. But not a one-year increase in a drought-based fungal infection.

This article does point to a problem with a specific toxin and the price paid by poorer countries who are exporting their better-grade crops for needed cash. Since Hepatitis B combines with the fungal toxin in a very bad way, we should be reading about the importance of providing hepatitis B vaccines to the nations most susceptible to the aspergillus mold affecting their crops.
